Stalham I&J Schools Specialist Hub of Inclusive Practice (SHIP)

Welcome to the Stalham SHIP

At Stalham Academy, we are proud to be developing a Specialist Hub of Inclusive Practice (SHIP) as part of Norfolk County Council’s Specialist Resource Base programme.

Our SHIP will provide a nurturing, highly inclusive specialist provision within our mainstream school environment. The provision is being developed to support children with co occurring special educational needs who require a more personalised approach to learning whilst still benefiting from belonging to a mainstream school community.

We believe every child deserves to feel safe, understood, valued and successful. Our SHIP will help children to flourish academically, socially and emotionally through highly tailored support, strong relationships and carefully planned inclusive practice.

What is a SHIP?

A Specialist Hub of Inclusive Practice (SHIP) is a specialist provision within a mainstream school. It enables children with a range of special educational needs and/or disabilities to access:

  • individualised support

  • small group teaching

  • specialist interventions

  • tailored learning environments

  • mainstream learning and wider school experiences where appropriate

SHIPs are part of Norfolk’s countywide Specialist Resource Base (SRB) programme.

Children attending the SHIP remain fully part of the Stalham Academy community and will continue to take part in school life, events, activities and opportunities alongside their peers.

Who Will the SHIP Support?

The SHIP is designed for children who:

  • have significant barriers to learning

  • require high levels of personalised support

  • may present with co occurring needs

  • benefit from smaller group learning and structured support

  • can access aspects of mainstream education with the right adaptations and support

This may include children with:

  • learning needs

  • neurodiverse profiles

  • speech, language and communication needs

  • developmental needs

  • social, emotional and mental health needs

The support each child receives will be personalised to meet their individual strengths and needs.

What Will the Provision Look Like?

The Stalham SHIP will include:

  • specialist teaching and support staff

  • personalised learning pathways

  • structured routines and nurturing approaches

  • calm and enabling learning environments

  • sensory and regulation support

  • opportunities for mainstream integration

  • strong partnership working with families and professionals

Children may spend different amounts of time within the SHIP and mainstream classrooms depending on their individual needs and stage of development.

For some children, the SHIP may initially provide the majority of their learning environment before gradually increasing wider mainstream participation over time.

Working in Partnership with Families

We know that positive relationships with families are essential.

We are committed to:

  • listening carefully to parents and carers

  • working collaboratively with families

  • ensuring children’s voices are heard

  • sharing progress regularly

  • supporting families with strategies and guidance

  • creating a welcoming and inclusive community

Families will play an important role in helping shape the support and provision around each child.

Admissions and Referrals

Placements within the SHIP are part of Norfolk County Council’s Specialist Resource Base admissions process

Referrals are considered through a county admissions and triage process involving schools, professionals and specialist staff.

If you would like to discuss whether the SHIP may be appropriate for your child, please contact your child's school SENDCo in the first instance.
